DRS Fellow Inaugural Lecture: Navigating Design Research Quality

Professor Amaresh Chakrabarti gave his Inaugural lecture on the 25 September 2026. The next DRS Fellow Inaugural Lecture will be on the 20 November 2026, at 2pm (GMT), by Professor Philip Cash.

    Title

Navigating Design Research Quality: Understanding and working with quality as a researcher and a field

    Biography

Philip Cash is a Professor of Design at the School of Design, Arts and Creative Industries, Northumbria University. He received a PhD in engineering design from the University of Bath in 2012. His research focuses on research quality, methodology and theory development in design. He also works on design processes with a particular interest in the processes and methods of design for behaviour change. Over the last decade he has published multiple journal papers on design research challenges, research methods, theorising, research publishing, and research quality with co-authors from across design research, management, and other disciplines. He is also working with over 120 contributors to deliver a new book for the field: The Design Research Guide.

    Abstract

Design research has matured into a discipline with distinct research practices, research quality understanding, research training, and publishing traditions. However, despite the strength of individual scholars or institutions, discipline level quality understanding remains fragmented and in places underdeveloped. In this talk I will discuss some of the contributing factors to this situation, as well as some of the opportunities this creates for researchers and the field. I will also discuss insights from recent work on research quality and publishing in the design research context with concrete implications for authors as well as editors and reviewers. Together, these discussions motivate a call to arms for the community and provide a roadmap for personal and field development.
