The Tulane University School of Architecture is seeking qualified candidates to serve as a Professor of Design Thinking and Director of Social Innovation & Social Entrepreneurship (SISE) Program at the rank of Professor of Practice.

The director will lead the Social Innovation & Social Entrepreneurship program and will contribute to the development of our research agenda in the area of Design and Design Thinking. The director will also play a critical role in defining the school and university-wide research initiatives through collaboration with other academic units and pan-university centers and with organizations beyond Tulane.

The initial term for this position is a three-year renewable, non-tenured appointment. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship is an interdisciplinary program for undergraduate students from across the campus situated within the School of Architecture. Building upon Tulane University’s strengths in civic engagement and service-learning, the program introduces students to design thinking methods applied to social innovation and social impact, with the objective of creating a more just and equitable society.

The Tulane School of Architecture is an innovator in the field of the built environment at multiple scales - from buildings to neighborhoods, and to large-scale landscapes and urban planning. We are dedicated to collaborating with other schools at Tulane such as Science and Engineering, Liberal Arts, Law, and Public Health. Tulane School of Architecture undertakes multidisciplinary research that involves climate change, coastal and riparian crisis, the process of historic preservation under these circumstances, and the  challenges for social and environmental justice. The city of New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta are our natural domains of research. However, the complicated nature of this region provides ample opportunities for comparative global studies. For this reason, we expect Tulane’s contributions to be of major relevance.

Qualifications

Successful candidates for this position will have an advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in the area of Design Thinking or other Design or related fields; commitment to rigorous research, social impact, and innovative curricula; and demonstrated effectiveness in university-level administration.

Candidates should exhibit proficiency in instruction in both undergraduate- and graduate-level seminars, labs and lecture courses. Service-learning and design studio teaching experience is preferred but not required.

Candidates are expected to have strong leadership and management skills that will qualify them as Director of the SISE program. Candidates should exhibit a high level of expertise in the field and a commitment to innovative pedagogy. Faculty members at Tulane School of Architecture are expected to teach; work with the faculty, the dean, and other departments at Tulane to develop curriculum; contribute to cross-disciplinary research initiatives, and engage in service through a range of academic committees.
