About the series

The global and local challenges we all face as design educators have asked difficult questions about where, when and how we engage in teaching. Yet other events have posed even harder questions around who is represented / included in, and what the purpose of, design education is in contemporary society.

In parallel to the contextual challenges, several initiatives have begun to explore the future of design education, such as the Design Declaration Summit held last year and, more recently, the Future of Design Education project, which proposes a more structured and explicit approach. PedSIG have been actively involved in many of these initiatives reflecting the views of members gathered through the PedSIG conferences, Learn X Design series.

Given the relevance and importance of this subject, we have planned a short series of DRS Pedagogy SIG events to explore  collective ideas and thoughts on ‘Futures of Design Education’.

We are particularly keen to help raise awareness of the plurality of possible futures represented by our membership. PedSIG is an expert community of practice and research and our wisdom and ideas are valuable in surfacing many constructions of design education (epistemologies, ontologies, experiences, wisdoms).

The first Futures of Design Education meetup hosted presentations and discussion on two engaging subjects: Lucia Tria talked about legacies of (hegemonic) global design curricula; and Ashraf Salama asked us to consider the current circumstance as an interruption to the Schön’s ‘stable state’.

You can find the recording of the presentations here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfjNh_9B5MA

And the meeting notes are here.

We are still keen to hear from anyone interested with any ideas of what else we could do or what other topics and areas people would be interested in hearing about.

And, of course, if anyone wants to get involved then please just let use know (derek.jones@open.ac.uk).
