DRM – A Design Research Methodology

According to Herbert Simon, a design is a plan for changing existing situations to preferred ones; designing is how such plans are constructed. Design research develops knowledge with which to inform and support design practice, management and education. DRM is a methodology for carrying out design research effectively and efficiently. DRM was developed, in 1991, by Lucienne Blessing, Amaresh Chakrabarti and (Late) Kenneth M Wallace, and expanded into a detailed methodology by Lucienne Blessing and Amaresh Chakrabarti (published in a book in 2009). DRM has been taught regularly by Lucienne Blessing and colleagues in the European Summer School on Design Research (under the auspices of the Design Society); it has been taught by Amaresh Chakrabarti and colleagues as a regular course for PhD students at IISc as well as in DRM Gurukooll – the Indian summer school on Design Research (under the auspices of DeScIn Academy). In the talk, DRM will be introduced with examples.
