Call for Papers/Drawings: Bureau d'étude de pratiques indisciplinées (BéPI)

10 Dec 2021 (All Day)

Two calls for proposals

BéPI is launching two calls for proposals on drawing and the built environment:

a call for papers for -IN DRAWING. TIME, INQUIRY, DIALOGUE and MATERIALITY, a conference on drawing practice in design

a call for drawing contributions for DRAWING IMAGINARY PLACES. REFLECTIONS ON TIME, SCALE, SITE and NARRATIVE, a publication on drawing imaginary places across disciplines.

While the conference and publication are distinct in their form and content, they both seek to better understand contemporary critical and reflexive drawing practices.

Interested contributors can send proposals for either or both. See bellow for further description on both calls for proposal.

Proposals may be sent in English or French.

-in Drawing

The Bureau d’étude de pratiques indisciplinées (BéPI) is seeking contributions for a two-day conference to explore drawing as an investigative practice in the fields of design. The event will be held in Montréal at the UQAM School of Design on 15-16 September 2022.

This conference seeks to explore critical and reflexive drawing practices in design. We are interested in the ways in which the act of drawing organizes and structures time and space—its own as well as those of its subject—and in the material conditions that drawing makes tangible as in those that make drawing possible. By situating drawing in this way, we intend to frame drawing as a practice which constitutes and evokes curiosity, questioning, inquiry, investigation, and discovery, as well as one that parallels and can stand in for encounter, conversation, dialogue, and exchange. –in Drawing will engage with the aesthetics (spatial, temporal and material) and the ethics of drawing (finding and making sense together) in four principal dimensions: in time, in investigation, in dialogue, and in materiality.

Please send:
a 350-word abstract
a maximum of five images (JPEG format, 300dpi)
a 100-word biography

to be-pi@uqam.ca no later than December 10th 2021, using the subject title: “Explorations in drawing”

Drawing Imaginary Places

We are seeking drawn contributions for a book to be published by Bloomsbury Publishing as part of the Drawing In series. Drawing Imaginary Places: Reflections on Time, Scale, Site and Narrative will bring together the drawn visions of architects, designers, artists and other disciplinary perspectives for a timely and necessary dialogue. The contributions will be read and organized according to the four threads of time, scale, site and narrative, and build a common ground for these imaginary places to cross path into a shared practice of drawing. The selected drawings will be printed in colour, full page, and will be assembled in a visual essay form according to thematic chapters.

Please send:
a 300 to 500-word description
a maximum of three images (JPEG format, 300dpi)
a 100-word biography

to be-pi@uqam.ca no later than December 10th 2021, using the subject title: “Drawing Imaginary Places”
