The AAUP's Journal of Academic Freedom is seeking submissions for its tenth volume, scheduled for publication in fall 2019. The journal's new call for papers, "Who's a Bully? Civility, Authoritarianism, and Power in the Contemporary Academy," invites original, scholarly articles that consider how “bullying” is implicated in conflicts taking place around discourses of civility and academic freedom. It includes several possible subtopics for exploring this theme, including precarity, identity, and labor; campus discourse; globalization; social media and communications; and private consulting and university discourse. Essays about other topics focused on academic freedom and its relations to shared governance, tenure, and collective bargaining are also welcome, but submissions responding to the call for papers will receive special consideration. Rachel Ida Buff, who edited Volume 9, published in September 2018, will continue as faculty editor for the volume. Buff teaches history and comparative ethnic studies at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where she also directs the Cultures and Communities Program. She is a founding member of the recently revived UW–Milwaukee AAUP chapter and Wisconsin AAUP conference. She is author of Immigration and the Political Economy of Home: West Indian Brooklyn and American Indian Minneapolis, 1945–1992 and Against the Deportation Terror: Organizing for Immigrant Rights in the Twentieth Century. She edited the volume Immigrant Rights in the Shadow of Citizenship and has served as a reviewer, editor, or editorial board member for journals, university presses, book series, and a workers’ center newspaper.
The Journal of Academic Freedom was established in 2010, filling the need for a scholarly journal that tracks the developing international discussion about academic freedom and its collateral issues across a wide range of academic disciplines. The journal, an open-access publication, is available online at https://www.aaup.org/JAF.
