L’Assemblea Nazionale della Società Italiana Design 2019 si svolgerà ad Ascoli Picerno, alla Scuola di Architettura e Design dell’Università di Camerino nei giorni del 13 e 14 giugno 2019.

In occasione del centenario della nascita del Bauhaus, la SID ha scelto di dedicare l’Assemblea annuale a una riflessione sulla ricerca di design a partire dalla sua capacità di dialogare con la Scuola che è stata il primo modello pedagogico e didattico per la nostra disciplina. Senza cercare improbabili elementi di pura continuità, che già nel secondo dopoguerra la Scuola di Ulm aveva messo in discussione in modo radicale, l’Assemblea diventa l’occasione per fare il punto su alcune questioni presenti al Bauhaus in forme e intensità molto diverse, poi arricchite in esperienze successive e rielaborate dalla ricerca contemporanea.

Un contributo essenziale al rinnovamento dell’eredità del Bauhaus è venuto da Tomás Maldonado. Lungo tutto il suo percorso di formatore e studioso, Maldonado ha spesso preso posizione nei confronti della “tradizione Bauhaus”, fin da quando aveva avuto il compito di avviare, non da solo, la Hochschule für Gestaltung a Ulm. Poi, a partire dalla battaglia per portare il design al livello della formazione universitaria, ha rinnovato i modelli precedenti, aprendo la disciplina alla dimensione della ricerca accademica. A pochi mesi dalla scomparsa di Maldonado, SID intende rendergli omaggio, senza atteggiamenti celebrativi ma puntando a valorizzare il suo sguardo critico su gran parte delle vicende che hanno caratterizzato la nostra disciplina, il sistema formativo e la ricerca.

Guardare criticamente ai modelli del passato e alle discontinuità che Maldonado ha impresso nelle occasioni in cui ha progettato corsi di formazione di design (soprattutto Scuola di Ulm e Politecnico di Milano) significa avere materia per discutere non soltanto dell’eredità delle due grandi Scuole del Novecento, ma delle prospettive della ricerca, per come viene interpretata e condotta in particolare dalle generazioni più giovani.

Partendo da queste premesse, sono state individuate tre questioni aperte, che ancora oggi rappresentano quadri di riferimento scientifico e culturale delle ricerche in design.

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the Bauhaus, the SID has chosen to dedicate the annual Assembly to a reflection on design research starting from its ability to dialogue with the School which was the first pedagogical and didactic model for our discipline. Without seeking improbable elements of pure continuity, which already in the second post-war period the Ulm School had radically questioned, the Assembly becomes an opportunity to take stock of some issues present at the Bauhaus in very different forms and intensity, then enriched in subsequent experiences and reworked by contemporary research.

An essential contribution to the renewal of the Bauhaus heritage came from Tomás Maldonado. Throughout his career as a formator and scholar, Maldonado has often taken a stand against the "Bauhaus tradition", ever since he had the task of starting, not alone, the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm. Then, starting from the battle to bring design to the level of university education, he renewed the previous models, opening up the discipline to the dimension of academic research. A few months after the death of Maldonado, SID intends to pay homage to it, without celebratory attitudes but aiming to enhance its critical look on most of the events that have characterized our discipline, the training system and research.

Looking critically at the models of the past and the discontinuities that Maldonado impressed on the occasions in which he designed design training courses (especially the Ulm School and the Milan Polytechnic) means having material to discuss not only the legacy of the two great Twentieth Century Schools , but research perspectives, as interpreted and conducted in particular by younger generations.

Starting from these premises, three open questions have been identified, which still represent scientific and cultural reference frameworks for design research.
